Docteur Auzoux had in the mid-19th century a thriving business in making anatomical models that could be taken apart. He sold not only human models but also animals and plants. The models were made of papier-mâché that was pressed in gypsum and metal molds. When the parts were dry, the surface was painted from life and full of detail.
Boerhaave Museum in Leiden owns 73 of such models, most of them was in a bad condition. RNA has restored these models; on the approach and restoration lectured and there is an international symposium dedicated to in 2008. There is also a publication on these models appeared ‘paper Anatomy, the wonderful world of Docteur Auzoux’ Walberg press in 2008.
